There is a special place seemingly isolated from the hustle and bustle in a city life. In the fast-paced society, most people are as busy as a beaver, working against the clock. So am I; however, whenever I feel suffocated by overwhelming pressure, coffee shop would serve as a refuge for me to take a short break. Of innumerable coffee shops, the coffee shop near my house fascinates me the most. Not only the cozy atmosphere and the slow movement of the coffee shop make me obsessed, but also the pleasant time I gather with my friends and the precious period I stay alone enchant me a lot.
When I come to the coffee shop, I always find the seat around the corner and close to the window. Bathed in the warm sunshine slightly through the window, I glimpse at people passing fast in front of me while immersing in my own world with an aroma of coffee beans.Touching the uneven table and sniffing at the distinctive fragrance from timbers, I have my tension relaxed.
Sometimes, I will have a reunion with my friends in the coffee shop. Wandering in the light music and the soft light, we confide in one another and chat about our respective recent lives. Sharing the sweets and sorrows of the lives with others, I gain a sense of contentment and re-ponder on the true meaning of life.
Getting away from the hectic schedule, I slow down my pace and go to the coffee shop on weekends to seek my inner peace. Here, with the unrestrained atmosphere, I can reflect on my tangled thoughts and put things into perspective. Under the light radiating beige and light yellow colors,I am granted a rare moment of serenity in a hustling and hustling world and savor the blissful solitude.Feeling that I am isolated from the hectic footsteps, I listen to my inner voice and enjoy the slow movement.
In the coffee shop, the aromatic coffee, soft music, and cozy ambiance all help relieve my stress and make me feel refreshed.Busy though I might be in the future, I would still come to the coffee shop whenever I am available.

When it comes to a special space, where will you think of at the first moment? When I was in senior high school, I liked to visit the pond at the corner of the school in my free time, and I always took a stroll around the pathway. This place provided me with a silent refuge to relax until I graduated from the school. Every time I returned to the school, this pond recalled my pleasant schooldays, remaining a special place in my mind no matter how long it will take.
The view of the pond accompanied by pavilion, stone chair, and drooping willow is still vivid in my mind. I thought very few schools could have such an elegant scene like ours. After graduating from high school, I seldom visit the pond, but I am certainly not a stranger to the view. As far as I remember, the willow is still drooping and so is the pavilion still standing in the middle of the pond.
In spring, if you pass by the pathway, you will be able to smell some fragrance of flowers as a greeting to you. Different flowers have their distinct scents; with breeze blowing, the unique smell spreads to all around the pond slowly. Every time I got close to this pond, I was extremely looking forward to knowing what the smell would be released today. The pond always attracted me to spend time sitting on the stone chair.
To calm down myself, I usually went to the pond and sat in the pavilion to rethink my academic problems. Visiting this pond, I could get more chances to discover the way to solve my worries like academic problems or peer problems. Besides, the silent scene also helped me to recollect myself; with the drooping willow and swaying flowers, I think those scene always can encourage me.
Although I have few chances to go back to my high school, I still take the pond as the most special place for me. I hope that I can keep the habit of visiting the pond to enjoy the silent atmosphere if I encounter some troubles in the future.

Experience or Books?

There is always a heated debate that "which is a better way to learn?books? or experience?" it seems that each side has their convincing argument. Those who support books say knowledge in the books is most important while those who support experience despise books. so, who is right? here our journal provides two essays to clear your doubts.
BOOK?
OR EXPERIENCE?
 賴仕偉
“Then felt I like some watcher of the skies when a new planet swims into his ken.” After reading Chapman’s Homer, John Keats thinks himself as an astronomer who has found a new planet. According to Keats’ poem, we can know that a good book has such a tremendous influence on a person. Surely, books can change a person deeply; but it is experience that has a more direct impact on us. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that I suppose the superiority of experience to books. In my opinion, experience and books complement each other and none of them can be absent from our life.

For me, books are the accumulation and concretization many forerunners’ experiences. When we are reading the books written by them, we can gain their thoughts, their experiences and even their worldview. In view of this, sometimes we can prevent ourselves from the danger that we may get into. What’s more, since the world is too large for us to travel around, books are exactly a good medium for us to know the outline of it. However, books may also be obstacles for us sometimes if a person thinks the contents in them as his whole world. There is a word in Buddhism: “As long as the Buddhism and its scriptures exist, people can definitely not arrive at enlightenment without other’s guidance.”

Books have limitations, and that’s the reason why we still need the experiences gone through by ourselves. Undoubtedly, we have gained a lot of knowledge from books, but we cannot deny that those books inevitably include the subjective opinions of their writers. Some authors only write down what they delight or what they want to write. Therefore, at this time, an experience is a process which is used to prove and correct the views we have got from the books and finally reconstruct them to be our own thoughts. Also, experiencing is the most direct way to contact this world, and no matter how awful and depressing an experience is, it is still an experience worth remembering.

So, I suppose we cannot lack either of them, and both of them do not surpass each other. Truly, we need to experience what the predecessors have experienced in order not to be confined in other people’s thoughts and values, and an experience is also a way to reflect what we have gained from books. However, books are still the foundations when we have to do something like the authors had gone through before. An experience is a gun while books are bullets. Without a gun, we cannot shoot out any one of them; and without bullets, a gun will become useless no matter how sophisticated it is.

To sum up, whether we prefer experience or books, we cannot deny the importance of the other. On the one hand, we will lack basic knowledge and understanding of things if we don’t read books at all. On the other hand, without experience, we will live in the ivory tower which is made of other people’s worldview. Therefore, only when the moment we go out to experience with the knowledge in certain degree, we will be able to act as if carrying a loaded gun, firing it continuously

Well goes the saying “life itself is a constant learning process.” From the cradle to grave, we keep learning, undergoing a metamorphosis from an ignorant child to a mature citizen. Nearly everyone agrees that learning is critically important, but in what way? It seems to be extremely controversial. Some say we should work hard on academic success. To paraphrase, they think knowledge from books is better. In contrast, others strongly recommend that we should gain knowledge from experience, rather than books. As far as I’m concerned, I believe experience and books are equally important; they are indispensable to each other.

Both experience and books have the efficacy of gaining knowledge, but the process is slightly different. Experience allows us to engage in an activity personally. In the process, we make, find the mistake, and learning from it. Also, experience will give you a profound lesson that only belongs to you, and you may be able to draw inspiration form it. In contrast, by reading books, we get knowledge from other’s account. These books are timeless wisdom of generations of people. Reading text in the books, absorbing knowledge, we will ultimately change it into our own wisdom. To sum up, both experience and books are ways to learn, broaden our view, and make us mature adults.

However, some people place too much emphasis on either experience or books. Some of them firmly believe that only through experience can we fully understand a thing, while books are less practical and flexible. Therefore, they just constantly participate in activities, ignoring books. Unlike those who support experience, other people prefer books. They think that reading books is the best way to explore the treasury of knowledge whereas experience takes too much time.

As a matter of fact, the best way to learn is a balanced combination of experience and books. If one just focuses on books and ignore experience, he or she will definitely lack the ability to solve problems, and then become a so-called “nerd”. Actually, although experience is time-consuming, getting some experience is necessary and worthwhile for those who completely focuses on books. Similarly, if one puts too much emphasis on experience and doesn’t care about the knowledge from books, one will see the surface of an event, only to find that he or she learns little from experience when encountering problems. Take travelling for example; travelling is a good way to experience charming local culture; however, a paucity of historical knowledge about this place will be a hindrance for you to get a deeper insight into the local culture. In other words, if a professor who specialized in the Maya culture travels to the Macha Picchu in Peru, he or she will get a deeper understanding into the culture while we who know nothing about Maya culture will simply be amazed at the spectacle of Macha Picchu. Only when one thoroughly understands the knowledge from books can he or she think deeply when one gets into a special situation.

In conclusion, I think it is high time for everyone to realize that experience and books are equally important, for they will complement each other, and a balanced combination of experience and books will infinitely enlarge the effect of learning. By striking a balance between experience and books, I believe that we will soon become a mature, well-learned adult.

Our New Life-New Technology

With the development of technology, our life have became more convenient than before. However, it is not easy for people to adapt some new technology, because the fear of the unknown is human' s nature. There are two essay about the new technology, let's take a look at the pros and cons of the technology.

宋菀欣

The Internet has been highly commended for introducing a new, progressive era. With the rapid development of information technology, information is readily available; and doubtlessly it has greatly changed our lives. Gone are the days of handwriting letters and checking movie times in the newspapers. However, I find the disadvantages of the Internet are more terrible.
Nowadays, just with a click of button, the Internet will give us a treasury of knowledge immediately; but a plethora of information is not necessarily a good thing. In the age of information explosion, information is so superfluous that many people, including me, can’t absorb completely. Also, to pursue high clickthrough rate, most online media will post unproved news to catch our eyes. What’s more, people in modern society tend to seek excitement in cyberspace or constantly check their Facebook updates when having dinner with family. As a result, the relationship with others seems to be more distant.
Some people may argue that there are some ways to solve those problems. We can pick many quality websites such as New York Times or BBC to visit, which may broaden our perspective. And we should learn to think critically, to differentiate the truth from the false in these Internet articles. Additionally, some people counter that they have to use social media in the computer age, or we will not keep up with others and be left behind.
I partly agree with their arguments. We can visit the good, trustworthy websites to get free and convenient information. But this way is not practical, for most people have been accustomed to reading short, funny articles through the Internet. They, especially young people, will not read articles in the New York Times as they are so long and hard to understand. Consequently, the Internet does cause harm to most people and often instill them with misinformation. Furthermore, if you don’t use social media, you actually will not be isolated. The relationship will build only when we interact with each other. As long as you have good character and the will to establish relationship with others, you will have friends.
To summarize, although the Internet provides me with many benefits, I’m still against it. It makes relationships between us more and more distant, and most people nowadays lose the ability to concentrate on long articles of high quality. In my opinion, the drawbacks the Internet brings outweigh the benefits.

With the development of technology, VR (virtual reality) is getting more and more popular in recent years. VR is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are able to interact in the 3D world. In addition, to improve and make the users have better experience, the VR try its best to simulate as many senses as possible. As a new technology, VR may have many potential risks; however, it broadens our horizons in the ages to come at the same time.
VR can be very helpful to our society if we utilize it effectively. First, VR can be applied in some professional training, like pilot, who can flying in the simulated sky without danger. Moreover, VR can rebuild the crime scene to help the police solve a case. Second, VR has been used in many recreation facilities, which can assist modern people with reducing life pressure. Third, in the future, we can expect that VR will be largely exploited when teachers are teaching any project or news anchors are broadcasting on TV. VR can bring about more awareness by showing the real situation in front of students and audiences.
But VR has some disadvantages that need to be solved at the same time. First of all, VR may put our healthy in danger. For example, some people reported that they would feel dizzy after using VR for too long, which is called VR motion sickness. Furthermore, some doctors are worried that if VR has been widely used in games, it may lead many people to game addition.
Although VR has many controversies, we could break all these problems down in the future. For the health problem, many researchers have dedicated to find causes and solution. Thus, those who look forward to VR believed that the problem can be settled in the years to come. As for the game addition, the government can legislate that how long a day players can participate in, which may prevent players from neglecting work and lessons.
To sum up, VR’s advantages outweigh disadvantages. In spite of the fact that it has some unsolved issues, VR is still very useful to our daily life. We should learn to adapt to a new technology with a broad mind instead of resisting to accept technological innovations in our society.

Changing attitudes could change your life

In our long lives, we will encounter various people, incidents, and also difficulties which would form our personalities and attitudes. The attitudes and characters may exist for a long time so that it is hard for us to change them. In these two essays, each of them has a turning point, which stimulates the authors to change their attitudes. After changing their perspectives, they become happier and can enjoy life better. Maybe after reading these two essays, you would start to think of changing attitudes is a marvelous way to live a more magnificent life.

“Your scores of Joint College Entrance Examination are the following.” When I received the score letter, I felt that this day was the end of the world. I couldn’t understand why I didn’t fill the answer of a multiple choice question on the answer sheet! Because of my foolishness, my goal of entering the School of Management at National Central University was broken into pieces, just like my heart. When I realized that I could only enter Chung Hsing University, majoring in the department of foreign languages and literatures, my face was like a wet weekend because I couldn’t accept the reality. But as the saying goes, “Sometimes misfortune is a blessing in disguise.” Through this unlucky event, I changed my attitudes toward things that I once looked down upon; and now, I feel very lucky for experiencing this.
At first, I thought that learning literature was a waste of time, not practicable, and couldn’t help us to find a better job. While listening to a professor’s lecture, I was always pondering what I could do after learning all these things? Like the department of accounting, they learned accounting and could become an accountant, or like the department of chemistry, they could use what they have learned to invent cosmetic or medicines. But what could I do with literature? The more I thought about this problem, the more I rejected to enter this department and didn’t want to study.
As time went by, I gradually had more interest in literature, and saw the fascinating part of it. I had a good time discussing plots and characters with my classmates. Through talking about fictions or poems, I could know my classmates’ distinctive ways of thinking and then knew further about their personalities. There were various kinds of opinions and thoughts, sparkling their own wonderful color, and combine into a gorgeous rainbow. It was a beautiful scenery.
Eventually, my thoughts changed because of watching a video clip. The video clip was filmed by a graduate student who was also from my department. It was about what you could learn from this department and what literature could do. She said that reading literature could understand western thoughts. Just like if foreigners know Confucian thoughts, they could understand more about our feelings or why we would act like that. Also, we could learn how to think logically. While reading, we would think of what message the author wants to deliver or what the meaning behind the character’s action is and so on. At last, we could cultivate our critical thinking skills. There isn’t only one right answer to literature. People could have their own explanation. So, we could discuss and talk about different ideas as well as learn how to illustrate our opinions in a good way. Since watching this video clip, I have realized that there are lots of things that I could learn from this department. Maybe these things are not skills which could be used in a specific job, but they are important personalities that could help us through our entire life.

After doubting myself and not knowing where to go, I eventually found out the path which I could keep moving on without hesitating. Moreover, I not only learned not to have preconceptions toward things which I didn’t know much but also realized that being modest to all kinds of knowledge is significant so that I won’t miss chances to broaden my horizons.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude,” said the laureate poet. During the studying process, I am invariably perplexed about my future, pondering on the meaning of studying. And the thought “Studying is nothing but meaningless” keep haunting my mind. Gradually, my passion slipped away. It was not until I read a book and a quote that I regained the purpose of my life. The book and the quote make me change my attitudes toward not only studying but the whole life. With the changed attitudes, I find my inner peace while studying and savor every failure.
In the past few years, I was just like a skiff aimlessly floating on the bondless ocean of knowledge. I was at a lost, doing things regularly but monotonously. My daily life was overwhelmed by countless tests. I compared my scores with others and was afraid of any failures. Nevertheless, I didn’t truly think about what I wanted; instead, I just followed the trend, pursuing the achievement blindly.
While losing in the abyss of blind comparing and doubting the meaning of studying, I occasionally read a book which changed my thinking manner. The book told me that we don’t need to compare ourselves with others desperately because terminally the person whom we need to take responsibility for is ourselves. And what we truly pursue is the inner peace lying in our minds not the vulgar achievement. Furthermore, studying makes you have the chance to choose what you want instead of being forced to earn a living. Those words awaked me, revived my zeal, and gave me the motivation to keep going on.
Now, as a college student, I study for myself with the inner peace lingering. Although constant setbacks have made me prone to lose enthusiasm, as the quote goes, “Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning how to dance in the rain.” Keeping this as my motto, I won’t dwell on the sadness; instead, I will savor the experience which I’ve learned from the failure, and then reignite my enthusiasm.
After changing attitudes, I no longer fall into a trap of being bewildered toward future. I realize that the person whom I should take responsibility for and study for is not my parents or anybody but myself. What’s more, facing the future, I will take a positive attitude, dance in the rain, and look for the silver lining whenever I’m confronted with failures or setbacks.

Special lost objects--necklaces

In the world filled with countless things, there must be some special objects that deeply influenced you. Sometimes, however, it isn’t until we lose or miss them that we will truly realize how important they are. People have tendency to learn from losses. Here are two essays talking about their special lost objects. After losing their irreplaceable necklaces, they truly grab the value of objects and hold some impressive lessons which are deeply imprinted on their hearts as well as guiding their lives.

魏紫煙
Most people have some certain objects that are important to them; for me, I have one as well. But not until I lost it did I realize how crucial it was to me. Last year, I was in a relationship with my boyfriend for four months, but we hadn’t got a token until last Christmas. It was time for me to learn how to cherish after I received the gift from my boyfriend.

I had relationship with my boyfriend in September; however, I often quarreled with him. At last Christmas, my boyfriend gave me a pair of necklace; the red one was mine, and the blue one was his. When he gave me the red necklace, I still sat in sullen silence and refused to respond.  Without any irritation, he said “I often made you angry, but I didn’t mean it. And the most important thing is I want you to know that even when we are in fight, I still stay with you just like this necklace. The necklace is a symbol of my love to you.”

The necklace was very exquisite and beautiful. For a long time, I loved it very much and I wore it everywhere even when I was taking a shower. The necklace was in a clover shape covered in emerald green. In the middle of four leaves was a small pink rhinestone. In addition, the chains of the pair of necklace were sliver, and his chain was a little longer than mine. At that time, whenever I feel panic or anxious about my future or something unknown, I would keep caressing it. The necklace made me stay calm and console as long as I touched it.
After I broke up with my boyfriend, we still remained our friendship. Good time never lasts; however, I suddenly felt extremely painful and betrayed when he didn’t reply my message. Out of rage, I decided to throw the necklace away. I soon regretted it. I rushed to the rubbish bin and tried to find it out from a mess. To my disappointment, I never found it from that time. I was so repented for this decision.
After so long, I gradually realized that although I broke up with my boyfriend, the necklace is still a proof of this precious relationship. The relationship could not be erased even if I threw the necklace away. In the end, from the bitter lesson, I understood the importance of neither taking anyone’s pay for granted nor making any decision while you are in fury.
劉庭熒

There are some special objects that are essential in one’s life; for me, it is a cross necklace which my dad gave me when I was a fifth grader. My dad gave the necklace to me when he became a Christian. He wanted to show me the love of God and said that God would help me overcome all the obstacles. I regretted badly that I had not believed in him and made a wrong decision after receiving the present. Years later, I finally realized the message my father had sent to me through the cross necklace.
I was totally surprised when the cross necklace came into view on my birthday party. The cross was in sliver with no decoration on it, very simple but beautiful. I was delighted and couldn’t believe that my dad gave me such a pretty accessory. He usually bought book or stationery for me as a birthday gift. When he told me that the cross represented God’s love, I couldn’t understand at all. Then, Dad said, “I know that you feel confused now. You can keep it as your amulet. One day, you will realize the message.” After that day, I always wore it, until the day I lost it.
I lost the cross necklace because of my act out of blind impulse. I was in a rebellious phase during junior high school so that I refused to follow my parents’ advice and acted harshly. One day, I was mad at my dad’s words and couldn’t control my anger. Then, I made a decision. I threw the necklace into the river, watching it flashing away down the stream. That day, I saw my father’s most sorrowful appearance, and it was caused by me.
While growing up, I eventually knew the message my dad wanted to deliver to me through the necklace. The necklace was a meaning of Dad and God’s love. Whenever I was in trouble, I could grasp it tightly in my palm and pray to God. “You are not alone,” which is the message. I regretted to throw the cross necklace away. The precious gift no longer exists. However, the image of the cross would be kept in my heart forever, like wearing an invisible necklace.
Today, I still think of the necklace. It reminds me to treasure the things I have and share my problems with God rather than solving it by myself. Although the cross necklace can never be found again, its image and message will never be forgotten.

Living longer is a trend, but it is not an inevitable outcome

Living longer is a trend, but it is not an inevitable outcome of human beings if people have not continuously made effort to it. When things happen, they are definitely caused by some events occurred in the past, and these things will also result in new ones in the future. Therefore, it is not only we connect an independent event with another, which is related to the former, that we can tell the whole picture of it, and the result of this process is so-called history. There is no exception that living longer, which is a common phenomenon in many countries, has it cause and effect. In view of this, there are two people's essay in this article aimed at analyzing the causes of living longer.

歐祐妘
Nowadays, the average age of people around the world has become longer than before. In the past, once people were infected by some diseases, the fatality rate was very high and people almost couldn’t resist the attack of virus. Therefore, it was nearly impossible for people to live over 70 years old. But now with the development of knowledge, we can live longer with many modern ways. There are three main reasons that cause us to live longer than before, including nutritious foods, medical treatment, and the development of technology.

First of all, advanced agricultural skills can provide enough nutrition to keep us healthy. Owing to the revolution of agriculture, farmers can eliminate the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and we can easily buy many nutritious foods from stores. For example, organic foods stores always attract many housekeepers. With organic foods, we can eat healthier than before and absorb more nutrition to make us live longer. Although the prices will be higher than general foods, the quality of foods will be guaranteed. Besides, people who eat organic foods can avoid pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Second, the improvement of medical treatment is playing an important role in people’s living longer. In the past, diseases have been a potential killer to reduce people’s lifespan. In our age, we don’t have to worry about the explosion of war or the spread of virus. With the National Health Insurance in Taiwan, we can get proper treatment and we don’t have to pay enormous medical expenses.
The most important of all, with the development of technology, we can create many types of equipment to take care of us. Before the advanced technology appeared, every time people got chronic diseases, their family members had to look after them all the days and the patient might still have the possibility to die. But with the new technology, we can monitor the condition immediately and make a treatment right away, which can reduce the mortality risk.
Living longer is a trend in our generation, and we can imagine the average ages will continuously increase in the future. Those causes make us live longer than before; however, we still have to make our effort and try our best to maintain the health to live longer. In this way, maybe it will be possible for us to live over 100 years old.

賴仕偉
Taiwan has been an aged society on April tenth, 2018, which means there are more than 14% of people in Taiwan who are above 65. Apart from the low birthrate, people nowadays tend to live much longer than before that leads Taiwan to be an aged society. However, living longer is not a specific phenomenon in Taiwan but a common one around the world. Therefore, there may be some universal reasons why people are prone to living longer today. As far as I am concerned, we can categorize these reasons roughly into three parts: the development of sanitation and medical science, the spread of information and knowledge, and the atmosphere of society.

With the improvement of sanitation and medical science, many diseases are eradicated, and even the incurable ones can be healed. For example, some facilities can separate pollutant from the public: since the finish of the sewerage system in London in the 19th century, the civilians were prevented from the extremely stench and the cholera caused by the dirty water. Also, the invention of new medicine and vaccines make some terminal illness, such as smallpox and tuberculosis, in the past become curable now. Although this is the most basic way that can extend people’s lives, it is also the most passive one since those achievements are only done by a minority of people.
Therefore, it is the spread of information and knowledge that makes the concepts of sanitation and medical science well-known. When Taiwan was under the colonization of Japan, the Taiwanese started to have the realization of keeping healthy and clean, and even eradicated the malaria from Taiwan forever. Today, some of us still receive information and knowledge such as “How to live a longer life” from the Internet, which is constantly enlightened. The spread of information and knowledge makes people from many countries know the information about their health and lives, and then changes their habit in order to live longer.
Last but not least, the atmosphere of society can also influence the life expectancy. Following the end of the World War II, everything seemed to come in peace: the economy revived, and people then didn’t have to live in fear and prepare to flee anytime. Therefore, in contrast to that chaotic situation during the war, people in the post-war period gradually dare to think about their future and are more willing to make effort to live. I suppose it is a person’s desire to live that makes them more long-lived than before.
Living longer may result from several causes, and sometimes these causes can also have an influence on each other. Those who live in a peaceful world do not have to worry about their livelihood, and some of them may have the ability to make their lives better through the medical science; and the development of information can spread the knowledge of medical science and enlighten their younger generations to invent more things which are beneficial to human beings. The cycle leads the whole world to a better one and those who benefit from it can live a longer life.
